Vision
We are building a Tulane where we practice our lived value of inclusive community with one another every day.
Mission
The staff of the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) coordinates university-wide efforts supporting inclusive academic excellence and access. We collaborate with university leaders to create, implement, and evaluate programs designed to ensure every student, faculty, and staff member can grow and thrive together. We collaboratively craft a vision for inclusive community that is unique to the Tulane community, and inspired by our place in New Orleans, the Gulf Region, and the world. In doing so, we engage our Tulane community in courageous conversations about the most challenging issues of our times – from the impacts of racism, sexism, heterosexism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, ableism, classism, xenophobia, and other societal inequities and their intersections to the social change efforts we can make now and in the future. We also engage in efforts that address inequities our community members have experienced.
History
The Office of EDI was developed in July 2020 in response to the voices of Tulane University students, staff, faculty administration, alumni, and community members who asked for increased support and coordination attending to EDI and racial equity progress on campus. The guiding principle of the EDI office is "Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Action." In our work, we honor the fact that work supporting inclusive academic excellence and access has roots in the desegregation of Tulane in 1963. We collaboratively work with partners on and off-campus and our work is informed by research on best practices that create a strong sense of belonging for all campus members. follow the leadership of long-time champions of equity and justice have advocated for EDI issues. Within our office, our efforts support intercultural life and address issues of race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, shared ancestry, disability, class, first-generation students, international, family-building, and other salient identities, cultural worldviews, and experiences for students, faculty, staff, and alumni at Tulane University.
